Oil Recommendations for MABBCO Long or Short Block

Oil Recommendations for MABBCO Long or Short Block & Lifters

  1. Make certain the engine and oil pump are pre-primed. MABBCO recommends priming all engines with a pressure pre-oiler.
  2. Always use the type of oil and SAE recommended by the engine’s original equipment manufacturer.
  3. Always use new oil and new oil filter (recommend an OEM oil filter) when initially installing the, MABBCO engine kit parts, long block, or short block.
  4. PRIOR TO INSTALLATION DO NOT SOAK YOUR LIFTERS IN OIL!
  5. After the initial installation change the oil and filter after the first 50 miles in an automotive application or 2 hours in a marine application and again after the first 1,000 miles in an automotive application or 20 hours in a marine application.
  6. In recent years oil manufactures have reduced the zinc in modern motor oils because it is not required for motors with roller lifter. However, in motors with flat lifters during the first 1,000 miles zinc is required for the lifter and camshaft to properly break-in. Therefore, if your motor has flat lifters, during the 1,000 mile break-in period use the following:
    • During the initial installation - Add one container of an additive with ZDDP to your normal oil or use an oil with ZDDP in the oil. An oil with ZDDP will clearly state the oil contains ZINC and list ZDDP as one of its ingredients.
    • At the 50 mile oil and filter change – Add one container of an additive with ZDDP to your normal oil or use an oil with ZDDP in the oil. An oil with ZDDP will clearly state the oil contains ZINC and list ZDDP as one of its ingredients.
  7. Do not use synthetic oil or a synthetic oil blend for the first 5,000 miles in an automotive application or 200 in a marine application after the initial installation, unless synthetic oil or a synthetic oil blend is the type of oil recommended by the engine’s original equipment manufacturer.
